Medical Equipment ALPHA-WAVE INDUCER: Induces sleep by increasing the alpha wave frequency to   the brain.  The Alpha Wave Inducer is a device meant to induce sleep in most humanoids. It is not meant to replace natural sleep, and cannot be used frequently. Consider it to be an electronic version of an anesthetic. Subject enters a deep dreamless sleep during which surgical procedures can be carried out without causing pain to the subject. Amniotic Scan:  Sensor readings of the fluid contained within the amniotic sac of a mammalian pregnancy. Such a scan can provide a wealth of information about the fetus, including its sex. Anabolic Protaplasers:  These devices are used to heal internal and external body damage without the need of opening the body cavity of the patient to effect repairs. They use small forcefields, phase-modulated lasers, and anabolic accelerators to quickly heal injuries without scarring. They come in a variety of sizes for different repairs. Smaller units are useful for fine work involving the eyes and ears, while larger units heal cuts and even broken bones. They temporarily confer the advantage of Instant Regeneration to the area treated, but cannot replace surgery in serious injuries. For example, if used on a very deep stab wound, they could seal the damaged tissues and prevent further blood loss, but a subcutaneous hole would remain unless closed with surgery. This device will not repair incidental damage resulting from the original injury. For example, an officer who has been stabbed may have the wound repaired in sickbay in 15 minutes, but will still have to deal with the blood loss.  AUTOSUTURE: Closes open wounds via a dermal stitching process. Handheld unit used to heal reasonably mild wounds to the skin. Autosutures can be used to close incisions, heal knife wounds, etc. In 2369 an autosuture was used to heal a stab wound received by Captain Jean Luc Picard.  Bandages:  Starfleet's Medical department has a wide variety of bandage options. Simple bandages made of sterile, inert materials that do not bind with clotting wounds are common. Dermapatch is available in a spray applicator, or in larger pre-formed pieces. Dermapatch has the same capabilities of Sensa-Skin.  BARISTATIC FILTER: Purifies planetary atmosphere by removing toxins and   pollutants.   BIO-BED:  A medical intensive care unit that consists of an orthopedically  designed bed, gas and liquid connect points, and an overhead medical sensor cluster. The hospital bed is, of course, one of the most important items to be found in any medical facility, as it is here that the patient will spend most of their time. Early beds were simply that - a place where the patient could rest in comfort. As technology progressed the hospital bed began to be come more flexible and it was only a matter of time before routine medical systems began to be incorporated as standard, leading to the early versions of the device which has come to be known as the Biobed.  Today, the Starfleet biobed is designed to provide the medical staff with a wide range of basic information on the patient. Inbuilt sensor systems allow the biobed to constantly monitor factors such as heart rate, respiration, temperature, etc. These are displayed on a permanent basis, usually on a panel located at the head of the biobed, so as to present the information in the most clearly and easily accessible manner possible. As a backup to the visual presentation, biobeds can be set to give audio information, including normal functions such as heartbeat or automatic alarms shoul d any body function fall outside a pre-set range.  The use of biobeds essentially means that every hospital bed today is equivalent to - or in fact, superior to - the "intensive care" beds of centuries ago. However, it is simply not resource efficient to include every type of medical device on every biobed. While the goal posts have shifted, then, even the most modern medical facilities still maintain a relatively few "high technology" beds supplemented by a much larger number of standard biobeds.  Biobed  The biobed allows real time viewing of the human anatomy through complicated Federation sensing equipment. It is the ultimate, nonhazardous extension of the X-Ray. It connects to several other devices in the field, most notably the surgical support frame.     --  SSF or "clamshell"      The surgical support frame is designed to augment the biobed for      surgical use.  It supplies the sterile enviroment for any      operating theater, has three access ports (superior, left lateral,      right lateral) and comes in different shapes and sizes.  It serves      as an infuser of intravenous and subcutaneous medication and its      sensor cover duplicates advanced tricorder capability.  Force field      generation serves to defibrillate the patient in cardiac arrest or      serves as a ventilator through pneumoventilation.  --  Overhead array      Hangs over the sickbay biobed.  Provides sterile surgical tools,      provides advanced support for biobed and SSF functions, and generates      a low level force field that can provide privacy by filtering light      or serve as a bacteriostatic barrier to prevent organisms from escaping      the operating theater.   BIOGENERATIVE FIELD: Accelerates the dermal cell growth, increasing the rate   of healing to a wound.  Utilized after a wound is closed. A Bioregenerative Field is an energy field used to accelerate cellular growth. Consider it to temporarily confer the advantage of Regeneration on the patient. A sterilite unit is typically used during this procedure to keep infection from being multiplied by the Bioregenerative Field.  BIOMOLECULAR REPLICATION: Replication of cells on the molecular level making  complete new organs with it.  BIOPLAST SHEETING: Outer covering of an android, similar to the epidermal   layer of a humanoid. Bio-temporal chamber:  Medical device created by the Emergency Medical Hologram aboard Voyager in 2379.The chamber was to be used to stave off morilogium in Kes and extend her life by as much as a year.The chamber used a bio-temporal field to push her cells into an earlier stage of entropic decay. Blood-gas infuser:  Medical instrument used to stabilize oxygen levels of a patient in respiratory distress.The Emergency Medical Hologram aboard Voyager used a blood-gas infuser on Neelix in 2371 when his lungs were stolen by Vidiians. Cardiac inducer ("defib unit"):  A handheld device with two portable probes capable of providing a measured polarization force throughout the body, used for cardiac resuscitation. This device does not damage the skin.  CARDIAC INDUCTION:  Emergency medical resuscitative treatment for cardiac   conditions.  CARDIAC REPLACEMENT:  Surgical procedure where a diseased or damaged heart is  replaced by an artificial heart.  CARDIOSTIMULATOR: Used to resuscitate a patient suffering from cardiac arrest.  CELLULAR SUTURES: Repairs internal organs at the cellular level. CPK ENZYMATIC THERAPY:  treatment for limiting the extent of spinal injury  CPK LEVELS:  Medical test used to detect creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) which   is an indicator of muscular damage, particularly in relation to diagnosing  cardiac damage.  COAGULATION ACTIVATOR: Promotes the coagulation of blood to a wound. A medical instrument used to stop bleeding. Cortical Analeptics:  Used to stabalize people.  CORTICAL STIMULATOR: Stimulates the synaptic pathways, reviving a patient with  neural trauma.  The Cortical Stimulator is a small device which is used to elevate the activity in the cortex of a patient. The stimulator is typically a small device which is attached to the cranium; it is used on patients who have reduced or damaged brain wave patterns. Decompression chamber:  Medical treatment facility aboard Federation starships for patients requiring treatment for exposure to atmospheric pressures other than Class M normal.  DERMAL REGENERATOR: Hand held device that utilizes a Biogenerative field to   accelerate tissue growth. The dermal regenerator is used to repair damage to the skin of the patient, including bruising and lacerations. The device is handheld; the doctor holds it over the damaged area and moves it slowly back and forth. The treatment typically lasts only a matter of a few seconds.  Hand-held device which promotes the rapid growth of skin. The device will promote a chemical balance which supports the growth of normal skin tissue over scar tissue. Wounds of up to moderate severity can be healed through a dermal regenerator, but use of the device must take into account foreign material in the wound site, depth of the wound, type of tissue, and several other factors. Except for minor wounds, dermal regeneration often serves only as a stopgap for the most critical wounds, which require hospitalization.   DETRONAL SCANNER: Reads and encodes DNA patterns from organic tissue. DIRECT RETICULAR STIMULATION:  Medical treatment, whereby electrical energy is directly applied via a neural stimulator to the nervous system, in an attempt   revive neural activity in a patient.  DNA REFERENCE SCAN:  Medical test used to assess a patients identify, by   matching DNA samples, from a previous sample.  DNA RESEQUENCING: a procedure in which a subject is genetically engineered for   specific traits. It is illegal, except to correct severe birth defects. Dynoscanner:  Sensor device used to detect low level molecular activity. ELECTROPHORETIC ANALYSIS:  Standardized medical test used to analyze cellular  components, to determine their origin.  ELECTROPHORETIC DIFFUSER: Purges tetryon isotopes.  ENDORPHINS:  naturally occurring neuro chemical consisting of opiate peptides,   similar to morphine that act upon the nervous system to affect feelings of   pain and/or pleasure.  EXOSCALPEL: Surgical device that incises the dermal layers via a highly   focused plasma beam. An experimental medical device used to stimulate the genetic code of an individual into growing whatever types of cells are needed by the patients. Experimental medical device, developed by neurogeneticist Dr. Toby Russell, designed to translate the genetic code into a specific set of replication instructions, allowing the device to grow a replacement organ. Starfleet Medical turned down three requests by Russell to test the device on humanoid patients, prior to her successful implementation of the technique on Lieutenant Worf in 2368. HEXAGEN THERAPY: A treatment for Yarim-Fel syndrome.    HYPERENCEPHALOGRAM: Measures and records brain wave activity.  HYPOSPRAY: Administers medications via a high velocity/low volume stream   forced through the dermal layers.  Inter-changeable vials allow for easy and   quick changes of medications. The Hypospray is a simple and effective method of delivering substances intravenously to a patient. The device consists of a spray head which can deliver drugs painlessly through the skin, and even through clothing. Attached to this is a swappable vial which contains the drugs to be delivered. The Hypospray has several major advantages over the syringe; since the skin is not broken by the spray, there is no contamination of the hyposprays tip during an injection. The device can therefore be used repeatedly without any need for sterilization of the tip. The hypospray is also completely painless, which has helped to make the widespread fear of injections a thing of the past.   INHIBITOR FIELD: Slows the metabolic functions down, effectively slowing the   effects of various diseases.  A field which slows the progress of a disease.  ISOBORAMINE: A neurotransmitter that mediates the synaptic functions between   host and symbiont. If levels drop below 40 percent the symbiont must be   transferred to another host. Decreased synaptic functions between host and   symbiont could lead to hallucinations. K-3 Indicator:  Medical measurement of neural activity corresponding to the level of pain being experienced by a patient. The biomedical displays on Constitution class starship sickbays incorporated a K-3 indicator. While Spock was under the control of the Denevan neural parasites in 2267, the K-3 indicator was nearly at maximum, indicating extreme pain. Laser Scalpel:  one of the simplest instruments used in the modern medical facility. This device uses a laser beam rather than a physical knife in order to cut the patient; this allows a greater degree of control over the incision, and by eliminating physical contact between instrument and patient reduces the risk of transmitting infections.   MEDICAL QUARANTINE FIELD: Force field that isolates potentially hazardous   biological specimens.   MEDICAL TRICORDER: A medical specific sensor and analysis device, set up as a   standard tricorder with an additional medical peripheral device (MP) to   monitor biofunctions.  The design allows for easy integration and data   swapping capabilities between the Tricorder, the MP, and a Star Fleet Computer   System. The standard medical tricorder consists of two components: the medical tricorder (MT) and medical tricorder peripheral (MP).  The MT serves much like a normal tricorder with an expanded medical database containing information on nearly all humanoid life forms and several hundred DNA-based non-humanioids. The MT can diagnose diseases through an artifically intelligent subprocessor and can suggest courses of treatment. The default POOL setting is either SHIPBOARD, or the nearest Memory Alpha Medical Datanet for tricorder downloading.  The MP serves as a complicated sensing device that provides limited real-time viewing of anatomy as the biobed. Further spectrographic information is also provided by the MP in its function as a portable sensor. The MP detaches from the MT housing and is handheld and moved over parts of the patient anatomy. The MP will pulse with the standard heartbeat and vital sign readings are displayed on the upper surface of the MP housing.  The Medical Tricorder is a modified TR-580 with an extra external medical probe and scanner attachment. It has the following capabilities and software on board: Biosampler ,Bioscanner, Chemscanner, Datalink, Environmental Analysis, Medscanner, Multiscanner, Radscanner. For its size, the Medical Tricorder can maintain and store vast amounts of data in its own memory, which it uses to help evaluate conditions on site. The Medical Tricorder has an external hand-held sensing device. This peripheral contains over 100 sensors, and the Tricorder contains a specialized medical database that provides detailed medical diagnostic tools in the field including tomographic and micrographic imaging. A small diagnosis wand fits into the top of the peripheral and is occasionally used by the physician to provide close high-resolution scans. Together, these sensors allow the Medical Tricorder to make very detailed diagnosis on known species. On unknown species, it is limited to telling if the life-form is sick or dying. A detailed analysis is not possible in such a situation. Effective range is about three yards.     MEDICAL OFFICER FIELD KIT: Small carrying case that includes:  Medical Tricorder  Hypospray w/ Vials  Dermal Regenerator  Cardio stimulator  Trauma Bandages  Selected Medications Physician's Medikit The Physician's Medikit is a small, strap-on case designed to carry emergency medical supplies. A Full Standard kit would include: 3 - Magnesite-nitron tablets 1 - Anabolic Protoplaser 1 - Bandage assortment (see above) 1 - Cardiostimulator 2 - Hyposprays 1 - Medical Tricorder 1 - Neural Stimulator 1 - Respirator 1 - Sampling kit and the following medications: 5 - Vials of Delactovine 5 - Vials of Tricordrazine 3 - Vials of Analgine 4 - Vials of Hyronalyn 3 - Vials of Panamyacin All doses of any drug type are contained in vials that must be inserted into the Hypospray. The standard kit may be altered to suit missions or situations, but must be altered before the mission begins. For example, if the doctor knows that he is going into a combat zone, he may replace the 3 vials of Panamyacin with more Hyronalyn or Analgine.   METORAPAN TREATMENTS:  Treatment that regenerates bone tissue in fracture   patients.  MICROTOME: Slices thin sections or organic tissue for analysis.  An electronic instrument used to cut very thin sections of organic tissue for microscopic examinations. Useful to acquire samples of diseased tissue for medical analysis. It is essentially the same as today's Microtome.  MOTOR ASSIST BANDS: Straps that supply electrical stimulation to the   neurological and muscular systems, allowing for the 'retraining' of damaged   muscles. MYOCARDIAL ENZYME BALANCE:  Medical test used in surgical procedures to test  cardiac enzyme levels. Nanites:  Submicroscopic robots originally designed to perform medical functions within the bloodstream of a living organism. Such functions could encompass intracellular surgery, eliminating individual disease cells, or removing clotted material from a blood vessel, and more. Manufactured with gigabytes of mechanical computer memory in Dakar, Senegal, nanites were designed for inner-nuclei exposure only during cellular surgeries, and were therefore kept in a nonfunctional state when not in use. While onboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D in 2366, Acting Ensign Wesley Crusher was conducting experiments in nanite interaction when his subjects suddenly went awry, resulting in the creation of sentient and self-replicating nanites. During their early explorations, the newly developed nanites interfered with vessels onboard systems which jeopardized a landmark astrophysics experiment being conducted by Doctor Paul Stubbs. Several developing nanites were unwittingly destroyed before being recognized as sentient life-forms. Once the level of their development was discovered, however, the nanites were willing to negotiate, and were finally granted colonization rights to planet Kavis Alpha IV. Nanites programmed for destructive purposes were also briefly considered by U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D personnel as a possible defense during the Borg offensive of 2367. This plan was abandoned due to the length of time required for the nanites to have an effect, which would have been weeks after the Borg attack of planet Earth. Nanosurgery:  Starships contain several specialized machines called nanites in a specialized chamber called the Nanoquelle. Nanites are machines that are invisible to the naked eye, but which possess gigabytes of computer memory. When nanites are introduced into the human body, they can do work such as the removal of arterial plaque, destroying virus, or working inside the nuclei of cells for intracellular repair. When not in use, nanites are deactivated by a special field in the Nanoquelle. A new class of injectable nanites has been created for experimental use in the Physician's Field Kit. These nanites have a limited life span and no self-repair capability.   NEO-ANALYPTIC TRANSMITTERS: Devices to apply neuromuscular adaptation.  NEURAL CORTICAL PROBE: Stimulates the growth of neural synapses.  NEURAL MODULATOR: Remodulates faulty neural impulses that cause "kinked"   nerves.  NEURAL IMAGING SCANNER: Scans the acuity of the brain, neural and synaptic   pathways, and the visual cortex, creating a diagnostic display for evaluation. NEURAL LINK: Emergency medical device allowing for the support of a failing   nervous system from a healthy nervous system. Used to restore autonomic nervous system functions that control cardiovascular, endocrine, and respiratory function. Primarily used to support patients with brainstem injuries. A neurolink consists of two 5 cm by 5 cm devices, one attached to the injured patient and one to a healthy person. Impulses from the healthy patients healthy brainstem are transmitted to the control center of the injured patient's autonomic nervous system. The use of the neurolink is an emergency measure as the supporting person rapidly tires, and the danger of negative feedback exists which could critically injure both the support person and the patient.  NEURAL METAPHASIC SHOCK:  Potentially fatal failure of the neuralogical   system.  NEURAL PATHWAY INDUCTION: Medical procedure to treat severe neural pathway  damage.  NEURAL POLARIC INDUCTION: Serious operation to repolarize neural sheaths.   Depolarization will cause heightened neural activity, reported causing visions   by patients. A patient has 50 percent chance to loss his vision.  NEURAL STIMULATOR: Increases neural activity to the central nervous system,   basically 'zapping' the neural network. Device used to repolarize neural activity in the brain rapidly. The neural stimulator can repolarize brain neurons which have been depolarized for up to one hour. The devices has several settings, and is used to resuscitate brain function after critical trauma.   NEURAL TRANSDUCER: Implanted bioelectric devices that receive neural impulses   from he brain and transmit to non-receptive voluntary muscle groups.  NEUROMUSCULAR ADAPTATION: A biomedical treatment intended to help members of  low-gravity species adapt to higher gravity.   OSTEOGENIC STIMULATOR:   Device to treat cranial trauma’s. Used for bone fracture.... replicating, cloning, or merely hyperstimulating the bone cells to form a new bone...however most examples that I have seen only apply use of this equipment to cranial injuries, for reasons unknown to me. Osteotractors:  These are medical tractor fields used to set and immobilize a broken bone prior to treatment with a Protoplaser. They act as a temporary cast during treatment.  PHORETIC ANALYZER:   Measures electric charges in a non-organic sample.   PHYSIOSTIMULATOR: Elevates the metabolic functions of an impaired patient.  The physiostimulator is a system designed to elevate metabolic functions in an impaired individual. The unit is typically a small handheld device. In 2267 Doctor mcCoy used a physiostimulator to bring Captain Kirk out of a deep coma which had been used to fool the Romulans into believing that he was dead.   PLASMA INFUSION UNIT: Dispenses additional plasma, as well as required fluid   and electrolytes via the Surgical Support Frame. An instrument used for transfusions of blood, blood plasma, and/or electrolytes into patients that need them. It is used the same way blood transfusions are today. The Plasma Infusion Unit also provides filtration of the material to be delivered.  POSOTRON EMMISION SENSOR: Detects positronic activity in the brain tissue. Presser:  A medical instrument used to stop blood flow.  PROTODYNOPLASER: Stabilizes the immune system. The protodynaplaser (sometimes misspelled as "protodynoplaser") serves as an artificial support for the immune system. It works by serving at the cell level itself, destroying individual cells through the projection of force fields at a beam diameter of 0.001 microns. The projection method offers several advantages over its ancient ancestor known as "laser surgery". One advantage is that the beams do not pass through the body, but stop at the individual cells. Furthermore, the shape of the beam itself can change. A polarization action can move cells out of the way of the beam, and the beam can narrow to destroy the floating viral cell until suitable nanotreatment or antiviral medication can be found. As the use of the protodynaplaser immobilizes the patient, the PDP is only the first step to recovery of the client immune system.  Psychotricorder:  Similar to the standard Tricorder, the Psychotricorder can also be used to record past memories of a patient. Typically it is used to retrieve memories within the last 24 hours. Kirk ordered a 24 hour regressive memory test on Montgomery Scott using a psychotricorder after the chief engineer was accused of murder on the planet Argelius II in 2267, although the test was interrupted when psych technician Karen Tracy was murdered by the malevolent entity occupying Scott's body.  PULMONARY SCANNER: Monitors blood viscosity, blood oxygen content, and various pulmonary readings. Pulmonary Support Unit:  Emergency cardiopulmonary support unit in use aboard Federation starships.  PARTENOGENIC IMPLANT: Artificial device surgically implanted to take the place   of a damaged organ.  PRESSER: Medical instrument used to stop blood flow.  Quarantine Transmitter:   These radio beacons are standard equipment onboard Federation starships and are capable of transmitting automated warning messages to send other ships away should a ship and its crew become dangerously contaminated with a plague or other infection. The U.S.S. Lantree NCC-1837's quarantine transmitter was activated by the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D after the entire crew compliment died from exposure to deadly antibodies from the Darwin Genetic Research Station.  RESONANCE TISSUE SCAN:  Medical diagnostic scan used to screen for infection. Scalpels: One of a specialized set of cutting tools used in surgery and field work. Most are high-powered lasers with a cauterize setting. Scapels are not toys and could be deadly weapons in the right circumstances. Some scapels have a monomolecular chain attachment when use of an energy scapel is not appropriate. The monomolecular chain is intermixed with a standard stainless steel spike and will cut through even the hardest materials with the right application of force.  SERO-AMINO READOUT:  A medical test to detect serotonin levels. Sickbay Overhead Sensor Cluster:  This is a circular arrangement of sensors located above all Bio-Beds in sickbay. It augments the sensors of the Bio-Bed, and also provides an emergency containment field to prevent contamination. SOMNETIC INDUCER: Similar to the ALPHA WAVE INDUCER  STASIS UNIT: Provides a state of suspended animation in the event proper care   is unavailable. Containing device that supports life by slowing down all biological activity within the perimeter of the unit. The device is designed to work with stasis medication, but can work without it. Statis units contain a generator that will support life at very decreased rates and are used for transport of critically injured patients for treatment at a medical facility. Portable statis units can also be used in the field, coming both in collar form (Class B) and 5cm x 5 cm form (Class C).  Sterile Dressings:  Many of the older methods work best. Along with the dermal regenerator, a simple application of Pseudocutan (TM) applies a dressing that allows most wounds to heal naturally. Pseudocutan dressings are absorbed into the body, and if the body rejects the dressing, antibodies break down the dressing rapidly to biodegradable matter. Dressings are used in emergencies (a roll of Pseudocutan is included in the Medical Trauma Kit) and for wounds which do not require dermal regeneration.  SONIC SEPERATOR: Separates tissue into fine bundles. Subdermal Scapel:  The subdermal scalpel is used for making incisions beneath the skin without breaking the skin itself. It therefore allows purely internal surgery to be performed, reducing the risk of infection and the need for instruments such as dermal regenerators.   SURGICAL SUPPORT FRAME: Creates a stable and sterile environment utilized for surgical procedures. SYNAPTIC INDUCTION:  Medical technique used for neurotherapy for patients   suffering from traumatic memory loss. SYNAPTIC RECONSTRUCTION: is surgery which neutralizes the synaptic  pathways responsible for deviant behavior. What it basically comes down to is "correcting" a persons "psychotic personality" through the means of surgery. This should not be performed on board a UCIP starship, only particular starbases spread out across the quadrant are equipped for such a  procedure.  T-CELL STIMULATOR: Increases the production of T-Cells, enabling the body to   naturally fight of disease and infection.  TISSUE MITIGATOR: Repairs less serious tissue injuries, such as scrapes, 1st   degree burns, and bruises.  TRANSPORTER BIOFILTER: Sub system of the transporter that scans incoming   transport patterns, detecting harmful organisms.
